The first Post-Panamax vessel was the RMS Queen Mary, launched in 1934. This category describes ships that are too big to fit in the original Panama Canal locks, including supertankers and large commercial and passenger ships. One TEU is approximately equivalent to the volume of a twenty-foot long intermodal shipping container. Container ships are classified based on the amount of cargo they can carry, measured in TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).
